Expert panels and speakers examining issues related to DEI have been a fixture at IAA conferences. And we are building a webinar series to assist members in creating – or enhancing – their own DEI program.

Opening Doors Together

March 2022 – It is well known that the investment advisory world and the career options it represents are not well known among many minority student populations — a fact that has hindered firms from accessing promising diverse talent and high-performing students from entering our industry. At the Investment Adviser Association’s 2022 Compliance Conference, Ammani Nagesh of Kirkland & Ellis and Keith Shoates of the Student Freedom Initiative talked about how we can open the doors to diverse talent.

March 2021 – At the Investment Adviser Association’s 2021 Compliance Conference, a panel of IAA members that included Brown Capital Management Chief Compliance Officer Robert E. Burks, Jr., Diamond Hill Capital Management General Counsel Carlotta King and Virtus Managing Partner Hope L. Newsome examined ways to make the industry more diverse, equitable and inclusive.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: An Investment Industry Imperative

October 2020 – The historic lack of diversity in the investment industry is certainly no secret. Recent events in our country have added even more urgency to the issue and have inspired more candid dialogue on how best to rectify it. The work of the industry leaders in this panel at the IAA’s 2020 Leadership Week shows their careers-long dedication to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. They shared their experiences and thoughts about the path forward and the challenges faced as our industry confronts and seeks to improve its record.

CEOs and the Data Speak – DEI in the Investment Management Industry

March 2021 – Despite some encouraging signs in specific regions, women’s participation in the investment management industry has remained stagnant for more than 20 years, according to data presented during this virtual Executive Roundtable hosted by the Women Business Collaborative, the Investment Adviser Association, and Morningstar.

The roundtable was introduced by WBC Executive Officer Edie Fraser IAA President & CEO Karen Barr co-moderated the panel, along with Alex Jung, Board Director, Investor and Strategic Advisor (former Partner and Head of Europe at Oak Hill Advisors). CEOs on the panel were Yie-Hsin Hung, CEO, New York Life Investment Management; Jennifer M. Johnson, President & CEO, Franklin Templeton; and Michelle Seitz, Chairman & CEO, Russell Investments. Presenting data were Laura P. Lutton, Head, Asset Management Solutions, Morningstar, Inc. and Sarah Maynard, Global Head, External Inclusion & Diversity Strategies and Programs, CFA Institute.

The Importance of Sponsoring Younger Professionals

October 2017 – Erica Williams is now a partner in the Government, Regulatory & Investigations Group at the law firm Kirkland & Ellis LLP – after serving as a Special Assistant to President Barack Obama and as  Deputy Chief of Staff to three SEC Chairs. At the Investment Adviser Association’s 2017 Leadership Conference in Chicago, Williams offered her perspective on diversity and inclusion in the workplace – specifically in the investment adviser workplace.

Millennials from a Millennial Perspective

October 2017 – Building an effective 21st century workforce was a major theme at the Investment Adviser Association’s 2017 Leadership Conference. One of the financial sector’s most successful millennials – Jilliene Helman – educated the C-Suite executives attending the conference about how millennials differ from other generations of employees in their expectations and goals. Helman earned her first million dollars at an early age and is founder and CEO of Mogul Realty.
